New York Yankees SP Michael Pineda is struggling this spring training season, battling to make the team’s starting rotation this season, but he could now be dealing with a shoulder injury. After allowing six runs on 71 pitches in just 2 2/3 innings on Friday, Pineda told reporters that he is dealing with some shoulder soreness.
The Yankees organization admitted that Pineda will undergo an MRI on Saturday.
Pineda has been a disappointment for the Yankees this spring training after being acquired via trade with the Seattle Mariners. New York surrendered their prized prospect Jesus Montero in order to acquire Pineda. Pineda has struggled with his pitches this spring and has undergone troubles with his velocity during his outings.
New York has to determine whether or not his shoulder soreness is a normal result of spring training or whether the discomfort Pineda is experiencing is something more.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Yankees manager Joe Girardi was non-committal when asked to whether or not Pineda will be in the Yankees starting rotation to start the season.
