The Boston Red Sox acquired a player they hope could give them some bench depth and a left handed bat this season. Boston turned a deal with the Seattle Mariners for OF/1B Mike Carp. Carp will add a left handed bat to the lineup and reportedly was acquired for either cash considerations or a player to be named later. Carp became available after the Mariners designated him for assignment on February 12.
Carp struggled with shoulder injuries last year posting a .213..312/.341 line in just 189 plate appearances but has a career line of .255/.327/.413. In order to make room on the Red Sox roster, the team moved OF Ryan Kalish to the 60-day disabled list while recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum.
He should provide insurance behind Mike Napoli at first bast this season while also being able to play the outfield.
