The Miami Marlins will lose backup catcher Jeff Mathis for at least six weeks. The Marlins were taking on the St. Louis Cardinals in a grapefruit league spring training contest when Cardinals Matt Holliday fouled off a ball that came around and struck Mathis on his right clavicle. The injury now leaves the Marlins thin at catcher. Mathis was the only other catcher on the teams spring training roster with any major league experience.
“It just got me square. It hit me in the pad. It’s just one of those things, catches you just right. Been hit there a lot of times. It felt like any other foul tip I’ve taken off the mask, off the shoulder, off the hand,” Mathis told reporters.
