On the heels of the news of a huge contract extension from the Seattle Mariners Thursday night, SP Felix Hernandez announced that he would skip the World Baseball Classic on Friday. Despite the reports of the deal being finalized on Thursday night, both the Mariners and Hernandez’s agent denied that any such deal had been finalized.
Since the deal is not officially finished, Hernandez will not pitch for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic while details are being worked out.
The agency which represents Hernandez, Octagon, told reporters, “We have still not reached an agreement, but we are moving forward. At this moment, we have covered 70 percent of the road.”
Hernandez apologized to his fellow countrymen on Twitter but hoped that they would understand that he needs to take care of his family first.
