There was hope that rest and some time off might be able to cure shortstop Rafael Furcal’s ailing elbow. On Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that the veteran infielder will undergo Tommy John surgery on his elbow and most likely will miss the entire 2013 season. Furcal made the trip to Pensacola, Florida to visit renowned surgery Dr. James Andrews who made the determination. Surgery is believed to take place next week.
Furcal reportedly opted for surgery over continued rehab of his elbow. The recovery time after surgery is expected to be six to eight months. “It’s very disappointing. I worked so hard in the offseason to get everything straight, working hard with the doctors the training team we did anything we could to get ready for spring training, ready for the season,” Furcal told reporters.
The veteran suffered the elbow injury at the tail end of last season and rehabbed it throughout the course of the offsesaon. A bone spur aggravated the injury.
St Louis will now decide between Pete Kozma or Ronny Cedeno to fill the vacancy at the shortstop position.
